A New Canadian Public Immigration Policy for International Students

Canada values its international students very much. From contributing over $21 billion to the economy every year to bringing youth, diversity, and vitality to the communities where they live and study, they graduate and want to find lucrative employment and continue to live in Canada.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit has been at the forefront for allowing this. 2020 saw a large number of student’s intentions to start working and gain experience in Canada affected by the pandemic and thus a solution has been proposed.

In January this year, the honorable minister of immigration of Canada, Marco Mendicino unveiled the new Canada public immigration policy. Former students who hold or held a PGWP would be allowed to apply for an open work permit. Foreign Graduates from Canadian universities and colleges with an expired or expiring PGWP have the good fortune of being able to apply for a new open work permit. The permit would be valid for 18 months, allowing former international students to remain in Canada, secure employment, and the work experience necessary to become permanent citizens.

The Canadian govt. continues to make efforts to encourage international students to settle permanently in Canada. The workforce is aging out and with a population growth rate that has not matched the expansion of the economy, there are a lot of opportunities for educated and skilled foreigners to create a bright future here.

Fifty years earlier, there were 6.6 people active in the workforce for any retiree in Canada. Now, there are 3 working Canadians or temporary residents for every retired Canadian. By 2035, that number would be down to two if something is not done now. It is a priority to revitalize the Canadian workforce, or the youth would have to suffer at the expense of the elderly in 15 to 20 years.
