It is now easy for temporary workers to work in Canada
Measures
for Temporary foreign workers
In
order to keep the economy going and support Canadian employers during this
pandemic, the Canadian government has chosen to continue processing visas in
the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) stream.
While
the Canadian government decided to seal its borders to non-residents in the
aftermath of the Coronavirus outbreak, it decided to keep the TFWP programme
running to promote Canadian industries like agriculture, Agri-food, and food
processing.
The
TFWP is a programme that allows Canadian firms facing labour shortages to hire
foreign employees after giving Canadian nationals and permanent residents first
priority in applying for such employment.
Individuals
who come to Canada under the TFWP must get a temporary work permit and complete
a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The LMIA shows that hiring a foreign
worker has a positive or neutral influence on the labour market in the local
area.
Expatriate
foreign workers who have lost their jobs on a temporary basis
Many
temporary foreign workers with employer-specific work permits have lost their
employment recently. They can be a great resource for other firms in Canada who
are experiencing labour shortages.
However,
obtaining a new work permit for a new employer might take months, making it
difficult for firms to hire these current employees.
Eligibility
Requirements
The
following qualifying requirements must be met by temporary foreign workers who
seek to take advantage of the new rule:
A.
They
must have a valid visa to stay in Canada.
B.
They
must have a work permit from the Temporary Foreign Worker Program or the
International Mobility Program that is particular to their employer.
C.
They
must have applied for a new work permit with a valid LMIA under one of the
programmes listed above.
Applicants
who meet the aforementioned eligibility requirements can apply to Immigration,
Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for authorization to begin working
before receiving their Canadian work permit. Within ten days, the application
will be processed, and the worker will be given permission to work for a new
employer.
Employer
duties to hire foreign labour, on the other hand, have not changed. They'll
need a valid LMIA or an Online LMIA Exempt Offer of Employment to back up their
work permit application.
